Mangalore: Kuwait Canara Welfare Association in association with ICYM / YCS, held a scholarship distribution ceremony at Shanti Kiran Bajjodi, here on September 1. Director of ICYM Fr Ronald D’Souza welcomed the gathering. The programme was inaugurated by the PRO of the Bishop’s House of Mangalore, Fr William Menezes by lighting the traditional lamp along with other dignitaries on the dais.
Member of the KCWA, Pascal Moneteiro delivered the keynote address. He said that KCWA which sowed the seed in 1989, started growing into a plant, the strength of KCWA also started growing and its horizon expanded. In addition to its primary motto “In pursuit of providing education to the poor children”, the association also wanted to preserve the Mangalorean culture and keep the Konkani language alive in Kuwait.
KCWA member Francis D’Cunha also spoke on the occasion. He said that the girls are progressing well and getting jobs, while the boys really are having tough time in getting jobs. He urged the boys to take up education as a challenge. He also said that our students never aim to become IPS, IAS officers nor do they try for any government job. Recently there were village accountant vacancies but sadly no any candidate from Christian community appeared for the interview. It is very sad that our youth don’t know the value of such jobs.
Fr William addressing the students said that KCWA has selected the deserving candidates for scholarship. Don’t think that you are poor, think it is a courtesy help from the KCWA to pursue your education, that’s the reason KCWA has recognized your talent and honoured you. It is a honour for your talent and your talent has been recognized. He urged the students to take up education seriously and try to get government jobs.
Scholarship was distributed to 206 students by Fr William Menezes on the occasion. Secreatary, ICYM Sheldon Crasta delivered the vote of thanks.
