On the occasion of receiving the ‘Cross of Honor’,
the ‘Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice’ form Pope Francis
Mr. Lawrence Simon D’Souza and Mr. Valerian Maxim D’Sa are great supporters of the Catholic Church to which they belong. They charitably participate to the needs of the Church and generously contribute to the welfare of the Clergy. Hence, Pope Francis has awarded them the Papal Honor the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice for their meritorious and distinguished service rendered to the Church and to the society. It is also known as the “Cross of Honour”, the medal was instituted by Pope Leo XIII and is given for distinguished service to the church by lay people and clergy. It is the highest medal that can be awarded to the laity by the Papacy.
Brief profile of Mr. Lawrence D’Souza and Mr. Valerian D’Sa is provided below:
Lawrence Simon D’souza
Mr. Lawrence D’ Souza, a successful businessman, currently living in Kuwait, was born on 11th May 1936, in Majebettu village in Shirva Parish of Udupi Diocese. His father, Simon D’ Souza and mother Remedia D’ Souza possibly dreamt that their son as an ambitious striking achiever, sent Lawrence to Don Bosco Elementary School and then to St.Mary’s High School, Shirva. He graduated from St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. Mr. Lawrence got married to Annie and the couple was blessed with four children; 3 sons and a daughter!
Lawrence D’Souza is a graduate in Economics and Accountancy. He arrived in Kuwait in 1957 and began his career with the Ministry of Communication. After serving for five years in Ministry of Communication, he joined the Kuwait Air Force in 1961 as Head of the Accounts and Personnel section. In 1975 he left Kuwait Air Force to embark on a private enterprise by forming ‘Caesars’ in partnership with Mr. Ghazi Al-Abdulrazzak; a very noble and highly educated Kuwaiti national. Since then Mr. Lawrence has been successfully managing the ‘Caesars Group’ as it’s Managing Director. The group owns 22 restaurants and confectioneries throughout Kuwait, 12 in UAE and 2 in Bahrain and has more than 2,000 employees. Today, Mr. Lawrence is an icon among the Indian businessmen community in Kuwait.
Mr. Lawrence is a great benefactor of the Catholic Church. He is a distinguished supporter and valued patron not only of KCWA but also of many other associations in the Middle East and in India. His concern for humanity and love for the needy brethren is laudable. He generously contributes towards the needs of peoples from all facets of society without considering their caste, creed or religion. Mr. Lawrence rarely attends events, doesn’t like publicity, never gives interviews; always prefers to stay behind and support the needy. People admire him for several reasons; his simple living style, his concern for the poor, his love for Konkani language and more importantly he has been a true big brother to several jobless youths in the Middle East. When we see his nature and principles, no one will doubt his credentials as he does not return anyone empty handed those who come to him seeking favor.
Valerian Maxim D’Sa
Mr. Valerian M. D’Sa, the steel man of Kuwait, nick-named as Valley D’Sa, was born on 15th December 1927, in Valencia Parish of Mangalore Diocese. His father’s name is Mr. Peter D’Sa and mother Teresa D’ Sa. Mr. Valley D’Sa got married to Luiza and the couple is blessed with seven children; five daughters and two sons.
After completing his studies in Mangalore in 1947, Mr. Vally D’Sa began his career with Anglo Iranian Oil Company and lived in Abdan, Iran. Subsequently, he arrived Kuwait in 1952 and joined Bader Al-Mulla, a leading business group in Kuwait. He left Al-Mulla in 1956 and started a private business forming Khalil Bahman & Partners Company in association with Mr. Khalil Bahman; a very noble and highly respectable Kuwaiti national. Since then, Mr. Vally D’Sa he has been successfully managing the company as its Managing Partner and Vice President. The company owns 6,000 TPA steel fabrication plant producing wide spectrum heavy, medium and light steel products and employs more than 300 skilled employees. The company also owns a hot-dip galvanizing plant providing galvanizing services. Today, Mr. Vally D’Sa is a well-known personality in the business community in Kuwait for the design, fabrication, galvanizing and supply of steel products.
Mr. Valley D’Sa openhandedly participates in the needs of the Catholic Church and wellbeing of the clergy. Heis a patron member of KCWA and his resolute support to KCWA is commendable. He generously helps people and always show great concern to the poor and downtrodden; particularly the jobless youths and poor children of our community who cannot afford basic education. In a nutshell Mr. Vally D’Sa is a spirit filled man of generous heart, always ready to lend a helping hand to the needy.
