July 1988 — The Inception
Sowing the Seeds of Service
As their steps steadied towards success in making a living, they were inspired to be of service to their fellow brethren in their homeland. Thus, Kuwait Canara Welfare Association emerged with the sole purpose of helping the neediest children in their education.
As the sowed seed started growing into a plant, the strength of KCWA also started increasing and its horizon expanded. In addition to its primary motto “In pursuit of providing education to the poor children”, KCWA also wanted to preserve the Mangalorean culture and keep the Konkani language alive in Kuwait.

September 1989 — Community Welfare
The Historic First Monthi Fest
With Mother Mary as its Patroness, KCWA embarked on its journey by celebrating the Monthi Fest (Feast of Nativity) for the first time in Kuwait’s history and shared the New Harvest’s fellowship meal with the parishioners. Since then, this feast is being celebrated with more than 3,500 devotees, irrespective of their nationalities, every year.
KCWA took the opportunity over three consecutive years (2022-24) to celebrate the Monthi Feast by feeding more than 2,000 underprivileged individuals across various orphanages and ashrams in the Mangalore and Udupi Dioceses. In 2025, this noble initiative reached new heights, with over 3,100 people enjoying a festive Monthi Fest meal at multiple shelter homes across the same dioceses.
1988–1989: Foundation & First Anniversary Milestone
Dedicated to its patroness, the **Mother of Perpetual Succor**, KCWA expanded rapidly from its initial root, reaching 64 members by its first annual General Assembly. Beyond direct member support, the association launched a successful raffle draw raising **INR 49,500 (KD 2,828)**, which was split evenly to support 33 weak parishes across the Mangalore diocese with INR 1,500 each. On July 14, 1989, KCWA celebrated its first grand anniversary under the blessings of Bishop Francis Micallef and Chief Guest Fr. John Pinto, solidifying its path toward turning dreams into tangible community relief.
1989–1990: The First Monti Fest & Historic Wilfy Nite
To foster brotherhood among members living far from home, the managing committee organized the historic first **Monti Fest** on September 10, 1989, at the Holy Family Cathedral, sharing blessed fresh corn from Mangalore and a fellowship meal with over 450 people alongside Johnny Suratkal’s social drama, *“Patim Apnayellem Dirvem”*. To build up educational capital, KCWA collaborated with Louis Rodrigues to organize the first-ever **Wilfy Nite in Kuwait** on November 30, 1989, raising a vital net surplus of **KD 688**. By June 15, 1990, following the local staging of the drama *“Tho Maka Naka”*, the association distributed **INR 1,35,000 (KD 7,500)** across 90 parishes.
1990–1993: Resiliency & Reconstruction Through the Gulf War
The outbreak of the Gulf War in 1990 brought KCWA’s operations to a sudden standstill as Iraqi forces devastated local infrastructure and set fire to oil wells, causing widespread community displacement and anxiety. Amidst this lingering trauma, the association was passionately reconstructed through the robust spiritual guidance of the clergy and dynamic leaders like **Fr. John Alex Pinto** and **Victor Monteiro**. This era marked a progressive turning point as women stepped forward into core leadership execution for the first time, led honorably by **Ida D’Silva** and **Mable Andrade**, culminating in the historic first family picnic at Mina Alzoor Public Beach on November 19, 1993.
1994: Sustainable Educational Foundations & Cultural Milestones
On April 15, 1994, KCWA organized the *“Konkani Sangeet Milan”* show and released its inaugural official souvenir magazine. Later that year on November 11, the official **KCWA Choir** was formally commissioned under the leadership of Francis D’Souza, Ruzai, alongside the release of a compilation cassette by Lancy Rodrigues. Crucially, 1994 revolutionized KCWA’s charity model: the association distributed **INR 1,50,000 by placing Fixed Deposits of INR 10,000 each across 15 targeted parishes** within the Mangalore diocese. This innovative system empowered local parish priests to use the annual interest to systematically pay for the tuition of underprivileged children year after year.
1999–2000: Institutional Infrastructure & Approved Constitution
Expanding its inner focus toward member families, KCWA launched its first children’s talent competition in 1999 with 160 participants. On January 8, 2000, one of KCWA’s crowning historic milestones was realized when the **St. Agnes Special School for the Handicapped** was officially inaugurated by Ramanath Rai, then Minister for Fisheries and Ports. KCWA contributed **INR 20,00,000** for the building construction to provide specialized computer education and free hostel infrastructure. On February 25, 2000, the General Body officially approved its structured operating Constitution and raised life membership dues to KD 100, while sending an honorable **INR 50,000** to the Indian Ambassador to back national defense during the Kargil War.
2006: Loss of a Legend & Milestones of the First Crore
In August 2006, KCWA suffered an immense structural loss with the passing of beloved founding member John Misquith (fondly known as ‘Johnny Suratkal’ or the ‘Comedy King’), who served the community selflessly; members mobilized **INR 3,00,000** to aid his grieving family. Despite the heartbreak, 2006 marked a monumental milestone as KCWA crossed **INR 1,00,00,000 (1 Crore)** in cumulative educational and humanitarian disbursements. At the commemorative *“Korodacho Kurov”* gala, the association honored past presidents and its foundational financial pillars: **Lawrence D’Souza (Caesars), Charles D’Sa (Basam International), Vally D’Sa (Khalil Bahman), Sam Alphonso (Al Thuwaini), and John Fernandes (Sanbouk)**. Main sponsor Felix D’Souza (Al-Rathath Est.) laid the immediate foundation for the second crore with a seed donation of **INR 1,00,000**.
2008–2014: Global Recognition & The Second Crore Milestone
For its 20th anniversary on April 4, 2008, KCWA staged *“Sobhan Saanz”* directed by Eric Ozario, hosted the Bishop of Bellary, and successfully advocated for the first **historic direct Mangalore–Kuwait flights**, which landed on July 18, 2008. On December 9, 2010, at the World Konkani Convention, Dr. Manohar Prabhu received an honorary award for KCWA directly from the **President of India, Pratibha Patil**. On April 13, 2013, the association celebrated crossing its second milestone marker with the grand presentation *“Don Korodancho Sombrom”*, where managing committee member Francis Sirur personally donated **INR 1,00,000** to launch the journey toward the third crore.
Educational Foundations
Earlier with limited funds, fixed amounts were sent to schools through Parish priests. But later as the association grew, better ideas resulted in fixing a specific amount in the banks as KCWA’s education fund and channeling the interest earned towards educating the needy children.
